104GALERIE is holding the solo exhibition ‘Der Trommler’ by the painter Pius Fox from April 13th 2019.
Fox was born in Berlin in 1983, and obtained a BA at the UdK (Berlin University of the Arts) under the professor Frank Badur in 2010. He then completed his postgraduate degree under the world-renowned Swiss painter and professor Pia Fries, who had been taught by Gerhard Richter. While remaining based in Berlin, Fox has held many solo and group exhibitions in major cities such as New York, Berlin, London and Paris, and through this experience he has developed an active international profile. His work has been acquired as part of the SØR Rusche Collection, and the collections of the Museum Sander Darmstadt, and the FRAC Auvergne.
This is the first introduction of his work to Japan.

The color blocks and traversing lines of Fox’s work call to mind abstract painting, yet from them one can also see a glimpse of architectural and spatial aspects, as his work transitions between painting and drawing, abstract and figurative expression, form and context. As though wrestling with himself he continues to work and rework his pieces – an approach called pentimento – and through this their immediate impression of abstraction gives way to deeper visual effects in the color contrast between the different layers generated by scratching off paint, and the texture of the surface. Also, for Fox, the interaction of color is a matter of great importance, and he has borrowed from Vermeer, Francesca and the masters of the Renaissance in order to develop his abstract painting.

In this exhibition, around 30 small to medium recent pieces and work from his latest series, inspired by the Grimms’ Fairy Tale “The Drummer”, will be shown in 104GALERIE-R. The artist will be in attendance at the opening reception at 19:00 on Friday April 12th.
