PAST EXHIBITION
Room 104
Nov 19th, 2021 - Dec 18th
104GALERIE is holding the exhibition ‘Room 104’ by Rudy Cremonini, who is based in Bologna, Italy, from Friday November 19th to Saturday December 18th 2021. Three years after his previous exhibition, this second show features 11 new pieces in various sizes.
Rudy Cremonini was born in Bologna, Italy in 1981. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Bologna and works in the same region. His major exhibitions include ‘Del processo e dell’archivio’ (City Museum of Rimini, Italy, 2019), ‘Nessun Dorma’ (Reggia di Caserta, Italy, 2018), ‘The Club’ (Galerie Thomas Fuchs, Stuttgart, Germany, 2017), ‘The Burning Island’ (City Museum of Belgrade, Serbia, 2017) among others, and he has been involved in many international solo and group exhibitions in countries such as the U.S., France, Germany, and of course Italy, gaining high acclaim internationally.
So in our show I am building a room of hotel, of private space in a boat
where you can find small things like a souvenir or a vase , where is a party and The protector leads the situation,
there is the special guest and a Wizard, it is a strange story, really dreamlike, and the public can come into this private party.” – Rudy Cremonini
The theme that Cremonini pursues has never changed: emotional contradictions and conflicts created between safe, comfortable, and convenient environments and freedom deprived of those things. In his painting, motifs full of life are always surrounded or enclosed, hinting at the presence of limitations.
The work in this exhibition depicts a private party in Room 104, a stage upon which we see an exclusive group of attendees, their different desires and pleasures, the prices they pay, and their controlled freedom.
Above all, what is interesting in this theme is the joy they experience through the sacrifices they make.
“The sinister thing is that perhaps there is pleasure in this kind of sacrifice; we are all predisposed to sacrifice certain things in exchange for survival. This is fundamentally the theme that occurs throughout my work.” – Rudy Cremonini, from ‘Interview with Rudy Cremonini April 2017;
Caroline Berner Kühl and Claudia Polter’ in Rudy Cremonini. Nessun Dorma, 2017
The people and things that appear in the works shown in this exhibition have the immediate charm of being humorous, or cute in some way. However, there is also extreme personal and emotional conflict and a sense of solitude hidden within the motifs, creating subdued and profound art. We would like to invite many people to visit and experience Rudy Cremonini’s work depicting the mysterious happenings in Room 104.
