Rudy Cremonini
Oh My Sweet KŪ
Jan 27th, 2024 - Feb 29th
104GALERIE (Nakameguro, Tokyo) is holding a solo exhibition by an Italian artist Rudy Cremonini “Oh My Sweet KŪ” from January 27th to February 29th 2024.
This exhibition, the third one by the artist after 2 years since the last time, will have 10 new pieces of painting of various sizes.
KŪ in the title Oh My Sweet KŪ is the Japanese word 空, meaning “nothingness”, or “emptiness”. Yet it is not simply being nothing,
but also a space between the audience and the canvas, or the subect of the painting and their backgroud. It also reflects the artist’s
intention to deal with “nothingnes = the status of being or feeling empty, or having nothing exisitng” as a theme of this series of work.
In the subject Cremonini paints, there is always a sense of emptiness, solidarity, and “a space with absence”. The painting of the artist,
who begins working without sketches and study but by applying paint directly on the canvas, conveys the process of his thoughts as he
tells in the following:
The first dialogue between myself and the paint was perhaps long, slow signs or lines with the brush, without removing it from the canvas.
With no rationale in mind, I chose to paint images through which lines can emerge or gain meaning.
The images I used helped me to find lines to paint.
In this way, lines change their meanings, becoming edges or borders.
Where there is a line there is an edge, where there is a horizontal there is a vertical, where there is a boundary there is something inside or
something outside.
This was not a rational process.
To my great surprise, my work, or my theme, emerged from this, and is evolving from it.
I naturally understood why a “gate” could become a “zebra in a zoo”, or a swimming pool, or a clearly defined tennis court.
After many paintings, I understood the meaning.
It was a natural process.
I have recently been thinking over this reflection:
If I made lines or edges, I would like to paint the void within them.
The works in this show illuminate this theme.
