PAST EXHIBITION
KOMOREBI DREAMS: supported by THE TOKYO TOILET Art Project / MASTER MIND
Dec 22nd, 2023 - Jan 20th, 2024
104GALERIE (Nakameguro, Tokyo) is holding a solo exhibition by Donata Wenders, “KOMOREBI DREAMS” from
December 22nd 2023 (Fri) to January 20th 2024 (Sat). Donata Wenders has long worked as a photographer on
films by her husband, Wim Wenders, and has also created her own documentaries of the films, and developed
her own work bridging out of the productions.
The exhibition features 12 pieces of Donata’s film work, parts of which were used in Wim Wenders’ latest work,
“PERFECT DAYS”, which opens on December 22nd 2023. The extracts used in the film form scenes that leave
a strong impression on the audience, and in this exhibition the series of film pieces that can be said to be the
original versions are on display.
Related photographic work will also be displayed with words from Takuma Takasaki, who worked as a co-writer
and producer on Wim Wenders’ film project.

Artist Statement
“The first time I heard the word ‘komorebi’
and learned about its meaning
during the preparation for PERFECT DAYS,
I was somehow moved to the core of my being.
I realized: it was going to be the underlying stream of the movie,
a subconscious flow in our hero’s mind,
an awareness of the lights and shadows
produced by the sun and the wind and the trees.
To shoot the ‘komorebi dreams’ of Hirayama
became my task for the film.
Ever since, my attention towards light has changed.
Looking out for ‘komorebi’ all over the city has rubbed off.
I know now: they are something we receive as a gift,
they come and go as grace does.
That is how I looked at them and shot them.
These softly moving light-dances are precious presents
even if they are gratuitous and often random.
The way daylight finds its ways through leaves
(nowadays also through all sorts of materials)
into our life and our presence
always seems mysteriously beautiful, playful and surprising.
It is up to us, however, to be aware of it.
Sometimes you feel it is just for you alone, for a short moment,
for a glimpse and a short salute from far away.
A ‘komorebi’ can give me great comfort and hope
and fill me with a joyful love for life.”
