PAST EXHIBITION
Pius Fox
Endgeister
Jun 17th, 2022 - Jul 16th
104GALERIE is holding a solo exhibition “Endgeister” by German-based Pius Fox between Friday June 17th to Saturday July 16th 2022.
This is Fox’s second solo exhibition at 104GALERIE, three years after the first, featuring new medium and large-scale pieces that the artist has been working on in recent years, along with small pieces that he has continued to produce since the previous exhibition.
Pius Fox was born in Berlin, Germany in 1983, and after graduating from UdK Berlin (Berlin University of the Arts) with a BA obtained under Frank Badur, he went on to complete an MA under Pia Fries in 2010. Today he is based in Berlin, but holds many solo and group exhibitions in major cities including New York, London, and Paris. His work has been acquired by the Albers Foundation (US), Frac Auvergne (France), Hauck Foundation (Germany), Von der Heydt Museum (Germany), and the Museum Kunstpalast (Germany), amongst others, indicating his international reputation.
The exhibition is composed of images of the faces of characters that appear in ancient myths, along with abstract works inspired by constellations spreading across the universe.
The title “Endgeister” is an original word, combining the German words “entgeistert” (“dumbfounded”) and “geister” (“ghost”). It suggests the artist’s feeling of disbelief and astonishment at the rapid pace of deterioration in the world, such as the war in Ukraine, the Covid pandemic, and the global environmental crisis, and his impression of the ancient faces as ghosts. However, the work is not only about an apocalyptic sentiment, End-geister, but also the flow of time, including history, the present, and the future.
Fox is known for his technique of repeating the process of applying many layers of paint and scratching and scraping the surface. The visual effect of his work means that the representation continuously shifts between painting and drawing, the abstract and the figurative, and form and content, amplifying the themes he deals with.
The various colors that emerge from the lower layers and the unique composition, with its evocation of architectural elements, gives the audience a feeling of reminiscence, as though they are tracing back their memories, while at the same time making them aware of an unknown visual experience.
We are excited to provide another glimpse into the world of Pius Fox.
