104GALERIE (Tokyo, Nakameguro) is holding “Oltre”, a solo exhibition by Robert Bosisio from the 3rd to the 31th of October 2023. This exhibition, his third at the gallery, two and a half years after the previous one, will introduce large-scale works of over four meters with the motif of clouds, alongside other small and medium-sized new pieces from the interior series centering on the indoor scenery in his mind’s eye.

Bosisio’s studio stands in Trodena, in the Tirol region of northern Italy. Close to the borders of Switzerland, Germany, and Austria it is located in the Alps, where mystical views of fog often spread outside the windows. In this place, surrounded by nature, Bosisio carefully produces his art, while checking how his pieces work in the natural light and from different distances. His explorative painting seems to grow out of the deep and quiet environment there. His work conveys the depth of his exploration and traces of the time he spends in this environment.

From the surface of the work, we see beautiful layers formed of various materials such as ash, tempera, wax, sand, and plaster overlaying one another. Viewing his portrait series the outlines surface vaguely, and you experience the passing of calm, comfortable time as though afterimages of your memories are arising. The interior series that Bosisio has been producing since early in his career reveal different parts, lines, and colors emerging to create a complex three-dimensional space.

“Oltre” is an Italian word meaning “beyond” or “further.” Bosisio’s paintings enable us to recognize not only what is being depicted, but also a certain presence of what is invisible beyond it.
This title expresses the imaginary world that spreads widely beyond the painting space – Robert Bosisio’s art itself. We hope many people are drawn into it through this exhibition.
